Bo and To - Hong Kong

My husband and I travelled across Latin America and I can say that the visit to Campamento Tortuguero Mayto was definitely the best experience in my life!! My husband and I stayed there for one month and everyday there were filled with amazing activities that you would never get bored.

The nature around Mayto is gifted, there are wonderful hiking tracks and crystal clear water, not to mention the endless beautiful beach.

The activities there were diversified. While surely sea turtle conservation was the main part, we were able to take part in various process from sea turtle rescuing, nest collection at liberation of baby sea turtles. Apart from that, environmental conservation is also an important part. There is a little village in the area, the camp has set up recycling bins in the village and they educate the youth in the school about environment conservation. Therefore, occasionally we would be taking part in recycling the collected items, cleaning up the village and the beach, and educating the youth in the school about environmental conservation. This is a great way to immerse into the local’s life, all the villagers there were super nice, we even made friends with the little boy in the grocery store!! 😊

You can easily see that all the staff in Mayto are deeply in love and understanding of nature. You don’t need to worry about language problem because the friendly staff there speak fluent English. And they are always like your friend more than just a staff, in leisure time we always play volleyball, cook local food and talk about dreams together (and learn Spanish from them, haha!).

The life in Mayto camp was natural and simple. We lived with barefoot throughout the entire month, because the sand there was so warm, soft and clean. I always enjoy the moment digging my foot into the warm sand while listening to the waves.

I will never forget the evenings where we released baby sea turtles towards the fiery sunset and the nights that we watched sea turtle laying eggs underneath the stars. Words are not enough to express this amazing place, please come and immerse yourself into this beautiful nature!!

“I just finished a week volunteering at Campamento Tortuguero Mayto via Hidden Horizons, and it was truly a magical experience! I had the opportunity to help conserve many turtle nests on exciting night patrols, to help with recycling plastic and cultivating gardens, and learned so much Spanish chatting with the amazing staff and volunteers. Highly recommend Hidden Horizons! ”

“We recently spent a week at the Mayto turtle volunteering programme and can honestly say it was one of the best weeks we’ve had. Led by Farid the team were all very welcoming and comforting in making a friendly environment and making the experience that much better! On top of that the activities and the location of the camp is truly one of a kind and we wouldn’t change a single bit of it!”
